After five years of extensive restoration, the Royal Apartments, Appartamenti Reali, at Palazzo Pitti are open to visitors!
Needless to say, I didn’t wait to visit and they are, well, palatial! To describe them as opulent, luxurious, elegant, grandiose, and may I say breathtaking, is no exaggeration! In brief: These fourteen rooms were home to three generations of ruling families: from the Medici, Lorraine and Savoy. Each generation had their influence on the configurations, function, and decor of the rooms. The last was Emanuele III of Savoy who left them to the state in 1919.

During your visit you are led through the fourteen palatial rooms, all exquisitely and meticulously restored from floor to ceiling including everything from the original parquet flooring to the luxurious silk wall coverings, draperies, frescoes, stuccoes, paintings, and the furnishings. Magnificent!

As you are ushered through the apartments in groups of 25 on a red carpet (appropriate!), there is no official “tour”/guide. You only have a few minutes in each apartment and there’s a lot to take in! There is barely time to take photos so I highly recommend reading more (links below) about them before your visit in order to fully appreciate them.
