Deruta is another of so many picturesque Italian hill towns.
Located in the region of Umbria and province of Perugia in central Italy…
Deruta has bragging rights to the production of the beautiful Italian ceramics known as majolica (also spelled maiolica).

The production of majolica was moved away from the town due to the risk of fire so you have to be sure to visit both the upper and lower areas.
I wrote about our visit to one of the most renowned majolica artisans, Grazia, and now I’d like to take you on a stroll through the very appealing town itself…
The population of Deruta is only about 10,000 but since we arrived in the afternoon when, traditionally, most shops and businesses close, it was practically empty.

It was actually quite pleasant to meander through the uncrowded pedestrian-only main thoroughfare… and explore side alleys and passageways at our leisure.
You have to remember to take your time… look up and in all directions for little treasures…
Pride in their tradition of majolica is apparent and everywhere you will see exquisite examples of their artistic heritage attractively decorating residences, museums, civic and business exteriors…
…churches, altars, niches…

During our visit I was also captivated by the photogenic cats!
They seemed to be quite willing to tolerate my attentions and, in some cases, pause and pose for a charming portrait…
Well, in most cases…
Wouldn’t you agree that Deruta is quite “cativating”?
Yes agreed, Deruta was absolutely charming! A real surprise also because I wasn’t expecting to find such a lovely ” upper” town above the more commercial district down below. Beautiful photos as usual and the cats were a treat!
Grazie Paula…
It is so fun to re-visit, isn’t it? I had never been to the “upper” town and loved it. I’m still not sure why
the cats here are so friendly – must be very well taken care of!
As always, grateful for your reflections and comments…
